The Occult

"If the Mormon Church weren't true, it would never have survived testimony meeting."- My mom

Hello my pretties!

I just listened to a thirteen hour audiobook about the occult. Having grown up Mormon, this changed everything for me.

The first Sunday of every month Mormons devote a meeting to baring their testimonies. All two hundred and fifty of us sit in silence waiting for someone to approach the podium and talk about how we know the church is true.

This testimony usually begins with the person talking about how the Spirit prompted them to get up. This is often followed by some uncomfortable declaration, like how they really love their family even though they don't show it. Or how they are grateful for God's love even though they are a sinner. Then they usually tell a story proving that God loves and blesses his faithful children; like walking away from an intersection minutes before a car crashes there.

Everyone has these kinds of stories. I used to collect them as evidence of God blessing his children. I believed. I prayed and got answers. I had strange things that defied logic happen to me. I believed that the more faithful I was, the more God would bless me.

Then I left the church. I stopped being "faithful" and logic defying events still happened to me and other undeserving people. We were blessed without turning to God.

The occult book went back in history over how people tried controlling this "force" that made things happen, and thus religions were born. People thought being good might persuade this force to bless them; or maybe offering up sacrifices. Great evil and great good and also a bunch of pointless time wasting was done in the pursuit of controlling this force, but nothing made any difference.

The force, whatever it was: God, the universe, Allah, Magic, luck, was simply unpredictable. For thousands of years, humanity has tried harnessing this power but no one has. It isn't like science  with consistent rules that we could test. It was simply the occult, the unexplained.

And for some reason, that gave me great relief.

Happy national corn chip day, everyone!

With love and kisses,

Sophia Skyy
